ANAND came home from school about as blue as a boy could be
As soon as he came on to the verandah his father knew that something
was wrong and asked, as Anand slumped into a chair,
"What's gone wrong?"
"It's that Mukerjee boy again."
"Why? What has he done?" father asked.
"Oh, nothing," answered Anand. "They
voted him in as school
leader today."
"So?" asked father. "Were you hoping
for that appointment
for yourself?"
"Wouldn't have
minded," replied Anand.
"But Promode Mukerjee
is shown favour or something.
I didn't stand a
chance."
"Are you sure he is favoured?" asked father.
"No, but I suppose he
is," said Anand. "He's the same
caste as some of the
teachers and gives presents to the
headmaster once in awhile."
"I don't think so," said his father. "I
know Mr. Chowdhury.
It
could be, you know, that Promode deserves the job.
He's a nice boy and a very hard worker."
"Ah, I know," said Anand,
